About this calculator

The Drywall Calculator estimates Sheetrock panels, screws, joint tape, and mud for a rectangular room. It follows Inch Calculator’s approach: wall area from width, length, and height, optional ceiling coverage, common panel sizes, and accessory rates for finishing supplies.

Room walls and optional ceiling

Enter width, length, and height in in/ft/yd/cm/m. Toggle the ceiling on when you are hanging drywall overhead, and subtract door/window openings for a tighter count.

Standard panel sizes

Choose 4′ × 8′, 4′ × 9′, 4′ × 10′, or 4′ × 12′ sheets. A 10% waste allowance helps cover cuts and broken panels.

Screws, tape, and mud

See screw count, tape length, ready-mix gallons, plus lightweight and quick-setting compound pounds based on published coverage rates.

Best for
  • Room renovations
  • New construction hang lists

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about this calculator—how it works, accuracy, and everyday use.

Measure the room’s width, length, and height. Wall area is 2 × (length + width) × height. Add length × width if you include the ceiling, subtract door and window openings, then divide by the sheet size (for example 32 sq ft for 4′ × 8′ panels). Round up and add about 10% for cuts and waste.

For a 10′ × 10′ room with a 9′ ceiling, walls plus ceiling total 460 sq ft. That is 15 sheets of 4′ × 8′ drywall before openings and waste—matching the Inch Calculator FAQ example.

Yes in everyday use. Sheetrock is a brand name for drywall, much like Kleenex for tissues. Panels also come in 4′ × 9′, 4′ × 10′, and 4′ × 12′ sizes and thicknesses such as 1/4″, 1/2″, and 5/8″.

Tape covers about 2–3 sq ft of drywall per linear foot. Lightweight (non-premixed) mud is about 0.053 lb per sq ft; quick-setting mix is about 0.073 lb per sq ft. Ready-mix is often estimated near 1 gallon per 100 sq ft—always check your product’s label.
